Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich were a comical duo who transformed Czech avante-garde theatre in the 1920s. The pair were leaders of the Osvobozene Divadlo (Prague Liberated Theatre) and they wrote satirical plays, songs and ballets. The worlds they created were new, absurd ones with wise and clownish characters that functioned as mouthpieces on the current political landscape and society at large.
They worked closely with composer and pianist Jaroslav Ježek, whose jazz and swing compositions complemented each performance. And here's two of their songs below to make your day!
