This is a pair of Modernist Bedside Tables believed to be designed by Robert Slezak and produced in former Czechoslovakia by the Slezak Furniture Company.

The Slezak Company was one of the leading Czech furniture producers. They were making different variations of modernist tubular furniture from chairs, tables to beds and wardrobes. The concept of the furniture made of tubular steel was first developed in 1920’s by Avant-garde architects (particularly by Marcel Breuer and Mart Stam) around the legendary Bauhaus School of design. Despite its radical design, the tubular furniture became an instant hit and various furniture producers started to make this type of furniture and collaborate with architects on designing new pieces.

This particular version of a bedside table is rare. It’s a design combination of Model N 3 and N 6 which can be found in Slezak catalogues from the 1930’s.

The main design feature of this piece is the wooden cube painted in cream colour that is suspended from its elegant tubular frame. The table has single door with a round handle in brown bakelite and a steel plate on its top.

Inside, there is open storage space in natural wooden brown finish with a sliding drawer in the top part.

The tables were sourced with additional red wallpaper and glass top. Its not clear whether this was part of the original purchase of whether that was added later. Another thing that adds a bit to a mystery and originality to the set is the fact, that both tables are hold only by three screws on one side opposite to four on the other.

The bedside tables are in good vintage condition with some wear - paint cracks and scratches on the wooden parts and on the chrome of the tubular frame. There are some small colour marks on the wood inside. All hardware and fittings are original. Our decision was not to re-chrome the frame or re paint the wooden surface as its unique character would be lost as we wanted to celebrate the great patina acquired over the years instead.
