1930's dining chair Model A 524 3/4 by Thonet
1930's dining chair Model A 524 3/4 by Thonet
This is an original dining chair designed in 1936. It can be found in the Thonet factory sales catalogue as model number A 524 3/4. This particular piece is believed to be produced by the Thonet company in one of their factories in former Czechoslovakia.
This model has a pared back form with nicely shaped back legs and curved seat. But without a doubt, the main design feature of these pieces are the remarkable contrast between honey brown coloured patterned walnut of the seat and the backrest with its dark chocolate brown colour of the legs and the seat frame. This piece is a lovely example of Thonet moving away from their decorative pieces in late 1930’s to Modernist simple forms that celebrate the raw beauty of the wood.
The chair has been recently completely refurbished to its former glory and have minimal wear. Our experienced craftsman has carried the restoration to the highest standard, using only the original techniques and reviving the beautiful natural pattern of both the seat and the backrest which were subsequently finished by hand in Shellac varnish.
